 What is Mohs Micrographic Surgery?

Mohs surgery provides the most precise method for removal of all cancerous tissue, while sparing the greatest amount of healthy tissue. For this reason, Mohs surgery typically results in a significantly smaller surgical defect while achieving the highest cure rate, as compared to other methods of skin cancer treatment. The Mohs procedure is recommended for skin cancer removal in anatomic areas where maximum preservation of healthy tissue is desirable for cosmetic and functional purposes. It is also indicated for lesions that have recurred following prior treatment or for lesions which have the greatest propensity for recurrence.

Typically, Mohs surgery is performed as an outpatient procedure in the physician's office. Although the patient is awake during the entire procedure, discomfort is usually minimal and no greater than it would be for more routine skin cancer surgeries. While it is not possible to predict the extent of involvement of any skin cancer, most Mohs surgeries are completed in four hours or less.

Most insurance policies cover the costs of Mohs surgery and the reconstruction of the resultant surgical defect.

What is Restylane®?

Restylane® is the newest FDA-approved non-surgical treatment available to soften facial lines and to add volume to the skin. It is a long-lasting filler which can create dramatic results. Restylane® is a clear gel which is injected into the skin to soften nasolabial lines (lines from the side of the nose to the angle of the mouth), marionette lines, and lines at the corner of the mouth. It can also be used to fill in acne scars and add definition to the lip border. It is made from hyaluronic acid, which is made naturally in the body. When injected into the skin, it attracts moisture and adds volume. Its effects last between 6-12 months, which is twice as long as collagen fillers.

Unlike collagen, Restylane® does not require an allergy test prior to injection. Side effects are minimal and include redness, swelling, pain, or tenderness which may last a few days. The procedure takes approximately 15-30 minutes. Topical anesthetics or a nerve block are commonly used before Restylane® treatment in sensitive areas. If you have a history of cold sores around your mouth, you may need an antiviral medication prior to treatment. The use of aspirin, vitamin E, and anti-inflammatory medications such as Advil and Ibuprofen may increase the risk of bleeding and bruising with Restylane®.

What is BOTOX®?

Botulinum toxin Type A (BOTOX®) is a purified protein which blocks the communication between the nerve fiber and muscle, which temporarily weakens facial muscles and softens wrinkles. The deep creases in between the eyebrows and forehead, which can give a false impression of anger or fatigue, respond very well to BOTOX®. Crow's feet around the eyes and excess underarm sweating can also be improved with BOTOX®. The procedure can be performed in minutes, and you can return to work immediately. It takes 3-4 days to take effect and the benefits can be expected to last between 3-4 months. It is a very safe procedure when performed by an experienced physician. Most patients are pleased that they appear more relaxed and rested.

What is Microdermabrasion?

Microdermabrasion is a gentle skin resurfacing technique which removes the top layer of the skin leaving it vibrant and smooth. We use the new DiamondTome TM machine which uses natural diamond chips to gently exfoliate top layer of the skin, while vacuuming away the dead skin cells. This stimulates the growth of new healthy skin cells and collagen and results in smoother, supple skin. This rejuvenation technique can help polish and improve dull, leathery skin texture, sun-damaged skin, fine wrinkles, enlarged pores, mild acne scarring, clogged pores, and mild pigment irregularities. It can be used on almost any part of the body.

Microdermabrasion is a simple, quick, convenient procedure. Treatments last approximately 20 minutes. It is a non-invasive technique with virtually no discomfort, downtime, or recovery. Your normal activities can be resumed immediately after treatment. Some patients will have a mild rosy glow after treatment. It is safe for dark-skinned patients and in patients with sensitive skin. For optimal results, we recommend a series of 6 treatments spaced approximately 2 weeks apart. Periodic repeat treatments are needed to maintain results after the initial regimen is completed.

As every individual is unique and has special care needs, a personal consultation is necessary. Call us today to start your skin on its way to a youthful, fresh, healthy-looking glow.

What do chemical peels do?

Glycolic acid and ß-Liftx® skin rejuvenation peels are both gentle chemical peels which can improve fine wrinkles, uneven pigmentation, dull skin texture, brown spots, acne, and sun damaged skin. Glycolic acid is a alpha hydroxy acid (AHA) which is derived from sugarcane. The ß-Liftx® peel is an innovative formulation that disperses salicylic acid as microcrystals. Both of these substances decrease the 'glue' which holds skin cells together and helps speed cell turnover. This results in smoother, softer skin and stimulates collagen formation which can improve fine wrinkles and sun damage.

In both procedures, a solution containing either glycolic or salicylic acid is applied to your skin for several minutes. Unlike other chemical peels, there is minimal peeling and redness so you can return to work immediately after your treatment. As they are gentle peels, it usually takes several treatments to get optimal results. The result is youthful, smooth, glowing skin.

Jessner's peel is a light chemical peel which can help improve acne, brown patches, fine wrinkles and sun damaged skin. Jessner's solution contains salicylic acid, resorcinol, and lactic acid. It works similarly to glycolic acid and the ß-Liftx® peel, but as it is a stronger solution, you will have some redness and peeling for a couple of days. The amount of peeling can be adjusted to your needs and desires. After discussing your skin rejuvenation goals with your doctor, she will recommend which type of peel is appropriate for your skin.
